Welcome to our website. The CNC/CIE is the collective Canadian voice of people interested in the science and art of light and lighting. Membership is open to anyone interested in any aspect of lighting including vision, photometry, colorimetry, photobiology and the application of these to the use of light and lighting both indoors and out. As part of its mandate, the CNC/CIE supports the Standards Council of Canada by providing the core of the membership of the Canadian mirror committee to ISO/TC 274 – Light and Lighting. ISO/TC 274 is responsible for standardization in the field of application of lighting in specific cases complementary to the work items of the CIE and the coordination of drafts standards from the CIE. 2023 Annual Meeting

The CNC/CIE 68th Annual Meeting was held on the 27th November, 2023. The approved minutes from that meeting are now available along with the updated CNC/CIE Terms of Reference.

CCPR and CIE joint Workshop on: '100 Years of V(λ) and Future of Photometry', 03 June 2024

This workshop will commemorate the 100th anniversary of V(λ), overview the history of spectral luminous efficiency functions and CIE colorimetry, and introduce the cone fundamentals published by CIE, then will discuss the future of photometry and colorimetry with cone-fundamental-based spectral luminous efficiency functions and color-matching functions. 

The workshop will be held at the Pavillon de Breteuil at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in Sèvres, France. On-line partici[pation will be available as well.  It is open to all researchers, engineers, and stakeholders in academia, industry, national metrology institutes, testing and calibration laboratories, lighting manufacturers, instrument manufacturers, and all others who are engaged in photometry and colorimetry.

The following sessions are planned::

  • Session 1 History of V(λ) and CIE Colorimetry
  • Session 2 Understanding Cone Fundamentals
  • Session 3 Photometry with Cone Fundamentals
  • Session 4 Discussion for future directions for photometry and colorimetry

Invited speakers include Peter Blattner (CIE Past President), Tony Bergen (CIE Vice President-Technical and convenor of CIE RF05), Lorne Whitehead (CIE TC 1-98 Chair) Yoshi Ohno (CCPR WG-SP TG16 Chair), Mike Pointer (UK), and Andrew Stockman (UK) Further speakers are to be announced.

Light up your inner muse!  Celebrating 100 years of V(λ) with the art of light

2024 is a landmark year!  We celebrate the centenary of the establishment of the V(λ) spectral luminous efficiency function for photopic vision by the International Commission on Illumination. This is the foundation of the physical measurement of light.

V(λ) underpins a century of scientific and technical achievements, and to fully celebrate this anniversary the CIE seeks your artistic contributions in the form of poems or visual art.

  • Poems are welcome in English, French, or German (the historic languages of the CIE).
  • Poems may be in any poetic style.
  • Visual art may take any form, including sculpture, painting, photography, video, media art and installations, etc., so long as the submission  can be shared electronically in a standard format (jpg, TIFF, mp4, etc.).

Submissions will be open until April 30, 2024.

  • An individual may submit one poem only.
  • An individual may submit once to the visual art category.
  • An individual may, if they choose, submit both one poem and one visual art entry.
  • Submissions will be reviewed in categories by panels including poets and artists.
  • The best submissions will be revealed at the CCPR/CIE Joint Workshop on 100 Years of V(λ) and the Future of Photometry (see above).
  • The creators of the best entries in each category will receive their choice of 3 CIE publications. Runners-up will receive their choice of 1 CIE publication.
  • The best and runner-up entries will be published in a CIE commemorative publication later in 2024.

The datasets are easily findable on the CIE website along with references to the internationally approved CIE publications where they were originally published.

New CIE Research Forum: Lighting in the Usage of Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality Devices

CIE has a new Research Forum (RF-04) on Lighting in the usage of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality devices. It aims to research the lighting issues raised from potential applications and scenarios of Augmented Reality (AR) technology. These potential applications include but are not limited to map navigation, industrial workshop assembly drawings, and instructions, security alert and target identification, medical surgery application, etc. If you want to join in the discussion of RF-04 then simply complete the TC and RF Membership Application form (filling in the requirements for RF membership) and send it to This email address is being protected from spambots. Call for Experts

CIE has over 70 Technical Committees (TCs) working on new reports and international standards. A brief description of each TC is available under CIE Technical Committees. If you have expertise to contribute to any of these, especially the new ones shown below, you can apply for membership by sending a completed CIE TC Membership form and CIE Copyright Agreement form  to the relevant TC Chair, with a copy to the This email address is being protected from spambots. JTC 20 (D6/D2) Wearable alpha-opic dosimetry and light logging methods, limitations, device calibration and data schemes

In addition to Technical Committee, you are encouraged to participate in CIE Research Fora (RFs). RFs exist to facilitate ongoing knowledge exchange and research on a scientific topic or research area where there is insufficient completed scientific work to support the work of a CIE Technical Committee. 

Currently the CIE has four RFs:

RF-01: Spectral Imaging
RF-02: Matters relating to temporal light modulation
RF-03: Matters related to Colour Rendition
RF-04: Lighting in the usage of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality devices

CIE Publications

One key activity of the CIE is the publication of technical and scientific work in the form of Technical Reports, International Standards, and Technical Notes. Technical Notes are freely available. Technical Reports and International Standards can be purchased through the CIE Web Shop. Summaries of recent publications, including links to recent Technical Notes, can be found under New Publications.

In addition to formal publications, the CIE Board of Administration will, from time to time, issue Position Statements. Summaries of recent CIE Position Statements can be found here.
